Angelfish reproduce at a relatively high frequency. Usually, they breed once every 10 to 15 days. The number of eggs laid each time varies from 400 to 1,200, and the specific number depends on the size and health condition of the adult fish. The breeding cycle of angelfish is rather frequent. Female fish can start laying eggs when they are about 8 months old, while male fish need a longer time to fully mature and usually reach their best state during the third to fourth breeding times.
The breeding process of angelfish includes egg laying and fertilization. When the parent fish show signs of impending egg laying, such as the swollen abdomen of the female fish, a spawning plate will be placed. The female fish lays eggs on the spawning plate, and then the male fish fertilizes them. After spawning, the parent fish will take turns fanning the water with their pectoral fins to provide sufficient oxygen and a suitable water flow to promote hatching. During the hatching process, the parent fish will peck off the unfertilized white eggs with their mouths to ensure the healthy hatching of the fish eggs.
In order to breed angelfish successfully, attention should be paid to the control of water quality and temperature. The water temperature should be kept between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius. The pH value of the water quality should be between 6.5 and 7.0, and the hardness should be between 3 and 6. Besides, when it comes to artificial hatching, a small oxygen pump should be set up to keep the water temperature constant and the white dead eggs should be cleaned up in a timely manner to prevent infection.
