Parrotfish belong to the Labridae family in the Perciformes order of the Actinopterygii class. They mainly live under the surface of tropical and subtropical oceans and are distributed in the Western Pacific Ocean, the Western Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and other regions. They inhabit the mixed areas of reefs and sand and feed on small benthic animals. They can even eat poisonous food.
Parrotfish cannot reproduce among themselves. They are usually cultivated through hybridization and are hybrids. Parrotfish play an important role in the coral reef ecosystem as they can excrete sand, which helps with the maintenance of the coral reef ecosystem.
